To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Super Mario, Nintendo launched Let’s Super Mario, a website inviting fans to create small Mario themed videos to share with the world. How could I not get involved with this?
Mario has always been a huge part of my life. Some of my earliest memories came from playing Super Mario, being completely enamored with the fun and wonder of his world, and I still fondly remember hot summer days spent in the cool basement of my cousin’s house as we took turns playing Super Mario World. I’ll even never forget the first time I played Paper Mario, getting beat by Bowser in the beginning and having never experienced interactive storytelling like that.
As gaming continues to evolve, becoming more like interactive novels with various themes; games that run the gamut of emotions and really make you think or feel sadness, guilt or fear, it’s amazing to think for 30 years one stalwart little plumber has consistently created an atmosphere of fun, and excited the imagination with his unique and colorful world.
Here’s to 30 more years, my old friend.
